"We were very pleased to be joined by the Mayor of Reading, Councillor Deborah Edwards, Alok Sharma, Member of Parliament for Reading West, and Barbara Lewis, Vice Chairman of National U3A. Their welcome presence was recognition of the valuable contribution that our U3A makes to the community as a whole.
Also present and equally welcome were two founder members of Reading U3A, Eileen Atwell and Mary Crosier.

MP meets officers

Ashok Sharma, MP Reading West meets Barbara Lewis, Vice-Chairman of U3A National, Fred Landeg our Chairman and Keith Barnes, MC for the day

"Starting with the presentation of our Silver Jubilee banner, the celebration included the writing- for-pleasure booklet, quizzes, exhibitions and a fabulous programme of entertainment and, along with the-behind-the scenes organisation, the afternoon truly embodied the spirit of U3A.
It would be wrong to single out the many individuals who planned, prepared, produced, rehearsed and made those greatly enjoyed and appreciated contributions, but our sincere thanks goes to them all.
In an inspirational speech, Barbara Lewis said the founding fathers of U3A had a vision that U3A would endure through the active participation and contribution of its members; Reading U3A was a magnificent example of their foresight.

"Our Silver Jubilee year is an opportunity to look back on our history and be grateful for the selfless contributions that members have made down the years which have made our U3A the vibrant organisation it is today. It is also an opportunity to look to the future and think how we too can continue their work and build on the foundations so firmly laid by them."
