Who better to tell you about the local country pubs than the walking group? Over the year we frequent approximately 30 pubs, some would say it's the best part of the walk. Recommending pubs can be a dodgy business, any that appear here will have been graced by our company within the past 2 months.
Q is for quirky and the Magpie & Parrot. It doesn't keep regular pub hours, if you're lucky you might find a guest ale along with Fuller's London Pride and until a few years ago food meant a bag of crisps. It's situated midway between Shinfield and Arborfield on the A327. A footpath runs along the pub boundary, good opportunity for a walk, and there's a bus stop nearby. The pub consists of a small bar furnished with empty whisky bottles, stuffed animals and what would generally be described as bric a brac. Behind this is the dining room which seats about 16 people also furnished quaintly. The food is good and very reasonably priced. Sweeny Todd pies are available, a smaller size than the normal, with chips and beans for under £6. A ploughman's with 3 chunks of cheese, slice of ham under a fiver.
Opening hours are 12:00 - 19:00 Mon to Fri, check for weekends, they don't sell coffee but they do sell eggs, ½ dozen extra large for £1.
